Pitching and promoting your research

This session, divided into three parts, will focus on various aspects of pitching and promoting your research. In the first 30 minutes, Joanne McEwan (FBL Research Development Advisor) will provide an overview of the research funding landscape and some information about popular funding schemes to highlight different kinds of applications and processes you might come across. We will then turn to a discussion about framing projects and tips for writing successful applications.

As you will be aware, Curtin’s research strategy values both Researcher-Driven and Demand-Driven Research. In the second part of the session, the focus will shift to demand-driven research and the intricate process of applying and adapting research capabilities to address industry challenges. Andrew Bell (Manager at Innovation Central; formerly a Strategic Project Officer in the ROC Research Partnerships team) will discuss the importance of listening, understanding and relationship building in this process, and provide advice about how to make your research interesting for industry and public audiences.

In the final part of the session, Paula McCarville (University Marketing team) will turn to the promotion of research to public audiences, and specifically the dos and don’ts of using social media to do so.

About the Speakers:

• Dr Joanne McEwan is   a Research Development Advisor in the Faculty of Business and Law. In this   capacity, she provides guidance on research-related matters and assists researchers   in areas such as research planning, identifying relevant funding   opportunities and preparing grant applications. She is also the Executive   Officer of Curtin’s Humanities and Social Sciences Grant Success Panel, which   supports Humanities and Business and Law researchers working on applications   for Australian Research Council schemes. Joanne has a PhD in History from The   University of Western Australia.
• Andrew Bell has a background in energy economics,   having worked in financial analysis and business development roles across   mining and energy sectors since 2010. Since joining Curtin University in   2016, Andrew has worked in the Research Office providing access for industry   to understand Curtin’s research capabilities. Andrew works with researchers   to leverage their capabilities to solve industry challenges and develop   mutually beneficial partnerships. In his current role as Manager of   Innovation Central Perth (ICP), he has a sharper focus on supporting digital   disruption and Industry 4.0, but sees the focus as negligible and insists   that there are ways for all of Curtin’s research expertise to be relevant.
• Paula McCarville has extensive Marketing experience managing   multi-channel campaigns across a broad range of industries from lifestyle,   construction, energy and education. In her current role as the Social Media   and Video Manager with Curtin University Marketing, through strategic   thinking, strong data and customer insight, she sets the social media   strategy to ensure maximum growth, reach and engagement of the Curtin social   media channels to enhance overall brand and reputation and to inspire people   to choose Curtin.
