Facebook’ recent name change to Meta is not just a clever marketing move to ditch a controversial brand but a confirmation that our social, business and work lives are inevitably moving towards a digital virtual reality of Web 3.0. COVID-19 accelerated greatly the process of digital transformation. However, the current clunky experience of Zoom work meetings is just a steppingstone to a fully immersive, multisensory digital reality ownable by the user – the metaverse. Blockchain technology, recognised as the heart of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, may determine whether the metaverse(s) will turn into a dystopia controlled by big tech corporations and an increasing socio-economic inequality or a more democratic society with egalitarian socio-economic opportunities. This interactive presentation discusses the implications of these two scenarios for work and employment and gives the audience a hands-on opportunity to interact with a metaverse run on an open public blockchain.…
