The Future of Work Institute and the Centre for Transformative Work Design (part of FOWI) are looking to recruit high calibre domestic PhD students who:
Have a background in organisational psychology/ organisational behaviour, or a closely related area such as cognitive, health or social psychology;
Are residents in Perth WA, or will be prepared to move to Perth for the duration of their candidature; and
Are able to begin their research journey with us in August 2020
Research Projects
We are looking to recruit candidates interested in the following projects:
1. Health and productivity in future work
Example topics include the following, but we welcome suggestions of other relevant topics:
Supporting the mental health of the workforce: How can employers support the mental health of their workforce in the face of ongoing and disruptive change?
Designing work of the future: How to optimally design jobs to maximise the benefits of, and minimise the risks of, new digital technologies.
Contemporary challenges in work design: How algorithmic management and other changes (e.g. increasing gig work) shape the quality of people's jobs.
Work Across Lives and Careers (WALC): Tracking longitudinally how people and their work changes over time using our new survey platform.
Newcomer socialisation: Exploring the socialisation tactics today’s organisations use to ensure newcomers learn about their job and internalise organisational values, and evaluating how effective the tactics are in helping newcomers becoming engaged, integrated and productive.
Incentives and compensation: Exploring how different forms of compensation influence employee motivation, performance and well-being using experimental and field organisational research methods.
Developing and optimising team work: Examining structural and process factors that influence team work effectiveness.
Digital recruitment and selection: Exploring how to design and use new digital recruitment and selection methods and assessments.
2. The future of work in a digital age
Technological innovations are rapidly changing the nature of work. Individuals and organisations are searching for new ways to understand and engage with these changes. This project is part of a larger research program investigating individual skills, psychological attributes, organisational systems that will be effective in future work. Specific research questions encompass the design of automated systems to optimise human performance and health, building a digital organisational culture, and sociotechnical approaches to change.
